How to Store Fresh Basil
Originally published September 16, 2021
Every summer I sell pounds and pounds of fresh basil, and I’m often asked “How do you store basil?”. Not everyone has the ability to rush home to make gobs of pesto that will be lovingly frozen for the winter. Sometimes you need to wait a day, or two….or more.
That’s ok. Basil can be kept fresh for several days, just please…..DO NOT REFRIGERATE BASIL!
Basil prefers temperatures around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. If you keep basil in the refrigerator, it will soon turn black and yucky. If you leave basil out, it will go limp and dry up. The best way to store fresh basil is at room temperature in an airtight container or bag. I keep it on my kitchen counter so I see it and remember to use it, but if your kitchen gets hot, consider keeping your airtight basil in another room in the house.
With moderately cool temperatures and airtight, your basil will stay fresh for several days until you are ready to use it. And, if you need any ideas, check out my Anything Pesto Recipe, it’s a base recipe that allows you to substitute some of the basil for other seasonal greens like kale, arugula or parsley. Enjoy and eat well!
